The research was carried out by PricewaterhouseCoopers.Since the dawn of human history, our activities have left an impact on Earth-from gathering food to farming, from building homes and cities to traveling across oceans.Īnd as the global population expanded and civilizations became more complex, that impact grew alongside it. The estimates are based on PricewaterhouseCoopers estimates and projections as well as UN urban agglomeration definitions and population estimates. The GDP figures are estimated and expressed in US$, using purchasing power parity exchange rates. Occasionally however, several cities of similar status and their suburbs make up an urban area. Most such agglomerations are economically, socially and culturally dominated by one city at their centre.
